Open Door Art Studio & Gallery hosts a number of curated exhibitions annually showcasing works created by artists with disabilities. Our exhibitions provide the artists we represent with an opportunity to share their artistic achievements with the Greater Columbus community and beyond. Also within the studio,

TELL IT LIKE IT IS

Opening Reception: March 11, 2017, 5-7 PM
Exhibition Dates: March 11 – March 31, 2017

Columbus-based artist Dan Gerdeman and Open Door artist Rex Lynch Tell It Like It Is! The two artists present an exhibition comprised of stylized characters accompanied by tongue-in-cheek text that will make viewers smile as they ponder the pitfalls of day-to-day life.

THIS INSPIRED THAT

Opening Reception: April 8, 2017, 5-7 PM
Exhibition Dates: April 8 – April 28, 2017

This Inspired That is a collaborative exhibition featuring artists and staff from Open Door and specially invited guest artists from the Columbus area. Each staff and guest artist select a work made by a studio artist that inspires them. They then use that spark of inspiration to create a companion piece of art. The pairs are displayed side-by-side in this engaging exhibition.

MASTERPIECES

Exhibition Dates: May 6 – June 2, 2017

Join Open Door as its artists draw from their favorite artistic idols, recreating their most beloved masterpieces created by their most admired master artists. In Masterpieces, recreations and reinterpretations of iconic works of art by will leave viewers feeling like they just left the Louvre!

ALL YOU CAN EAT

Opening Reception: July 8, 2017, 5-7 PM
Exhibition Dates: July 8 – July 28, 2017

Feast your eyes on a smorgasbord of culinary-themed works of art in All You Can Eat. Your mouth will water and your stomach will growl while viewing artworks featuring Open Door artists’ favorite foods. One thing is certain; this exhibition will leave foodies alike hungry for more!

HUMAN

Opening Reception: August 12, 2017, 5-7 PM
Exhibition Dates: August 12 – September 1, 2017

AJ Vanderelli guest curates Human, an exhibition that pushes past the visual. Local artists selected by Vanderelli will complete a portrait of an Open Door artist with whom they feel a connection, and the Open Door artist will then create a response portrait. The portraits created will symbolize a dialogue of creativity and community connection.

Are You Afraid of the Art? is an exhibition of creepy crawly artworks of all shapes and sizes.  Enjoy art featuring monsters, witches, and zombies, as well as our annual masquerade event, full of costumes, hocus pocus, make-believe, and of course, lots of candy!

WALLACE PECK: WORKS ON PAPER

Open Door Art Studio presents Wallace Peck: Works on Paper, the latest body of work created by the locally-renowned artist. By returning to his original mediums of choice — charcoal, graphite, and pastel, this work provides the perfect balance between the raw and the intuitive qualities of his earlier pieces and the artistic refinement he has found in recent years.

Tony Hoover, John Miller, and Mark Taylor invite you to celebrate all things Columbus with Six One Four, a capital-centric exhibition. Allow these artists to visually guide you through our city with artworks depicting iconic buildings, historic neighborhoods, and beloved landmarks.

Open Door gets ready to rock out with our first ever works on paper exhibit! Rock, Paper, Scissors will be loads of fun, just like the classic game. You’ll be rocking out to live music, viewing works on paper, and we will be taking donations of new or gently used art supplies, scissors included!

The artists of Open Door become storytellers in this exhibition of written and illustrated word. Our artists are inspired to convey plot twists, heroes, and even a few antagonists. Open Door welcomes you to wrap your mind around Don’t Be Square, an all-inclusive exhibition featuring works created on planes free from quadrilateral restraints. This unique collection will be comprised of art fashioned on surfaces of any shape other than the traditionally four-sided. Coinciding with our annual open house, Don’t Be Square is a fantastic opportunity to better understand the people behind Open Door, as well as our mission.

FLORA & FAUNA

Open Door artists share their delightful depictions of the great outdoors in Flora & Fauna. Blooming flowers and creative critters are showcased in this exhibit, which leaves viewers feeling more in tune with their natural surroundings.

BIG AND SMALL WONDERS

Big and Small Wonders juxtaposes the “large and in charge” with the “neat and petite.” Very large paintings that measure over thirty-six inches are displayed amongst whimsical, small works that are no larger than twelve inches. Regardless of size, all works in this exhibit make a big impact!

Open Door heats things up for their annual open house with the exhibit, Red Hot! All works in this exhibit find their inspiration, in part, from the vibrant hues of red. These smoldering paintings and sculptures showcase all the visionary, artistic, voices of Open Door. This event is a fantastic opportunity to better understand the people behind the studio, as well as Open Door’s mission.

Small Wonders is a collaborative show featuring artists from Open Door Art Studio and Cincinnati’s Visionaries and Voices. This exhibit showcases wonderful works in small sizes, as each piece is no larger than twelve inches in any direction. Join us for this big night of small works.

Bold color fields, dancing lines, and engaging shapes are the expressive content of non-objective works. These artworks convey emotions without the depiction of recognizable imagery. No Objections features work from Open Door’s non-objective artists, including Marty Freireich and Larry Ross. Viewers will certainly make no objections to these stunning works of art.

Figurative Language is an exhibit of works created by three exemplary artists. Porter, Emanuele, and Peck each approach depicting the figure with a fresh perspective. Peck’s concentric lines, Emanuele’s bold colors, and Porter’s ethereal washes distinguish their work from one another. When displayed together the figures truly come to life.

Outside / In features work from several accessible art studios throughout Ohio. With this exhibit we hope to build partnerships, explore art as a tool for advocacy, and celebrate all the amazing things happening in the world of Outsider Art in Ohio. Ohio is paving the way for creating an arts landscape that does not relegate Outsider Art to the periphery, but instead lets it come right on IN!
